Day 1: Nairobi – Giraffe Manor

In 1932, Sir David Duncan constructed the Giraffe Manor on 120 acres of land that is conveniently located just outside of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. The Scottish earl’s grandson, Jock Leslie-Melville, and his wife, Betty, purchased the Manor in 1974 and used it as the headquarters for the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW). They took five orphaned Rothschild giraffes and successfully raised them; today, those giraffes are reproducing and saving the species. After Jock passed away, Betty welcomed guests into her home. It’s the only spot in the world where you can go in the front door, have lunch while watching giraffes graze just outside your window, and even feed them from your second-floor bedroom window. At the manor, visitors can feed and take pictures of giraffes and warthogs, and in the nearby forest, they can see bushbuck, dik dik, and more than 180 species of birds. With its art deco touches and four-poster beds, Giraffe Manor is a luxurious boutique hotel that transports guests back to the 1930s. There are eight deluxe rooms and two basic rooms at this hotel, and each one is uniquely decorated and equipped with high-end amenities.
