Palace Museum

Tourists visiting Stone Town just must pay a visit to The Palace Museum, also known as the Sultan’s Palace, the town’s most historic structure. The site was renamed The People’s Palace after it was used as a government structure following the revolution of 1964. It now houses artifacts from the Sultans’ past and is open to the public as a museum.

House of Wonders

Among Stone Town’s most iconic and historically significant structures is the House of Wonders. Balconies and slender steel pillars rise in magnificent tiers to support the House of Wonders, which offers breathtaking views of the waterfront. Two bronze cannons bearing Portuguese inscriptions from the 16th century stand guard in front of what are supposedly the biggest carved doors in East Africa. It is an excellent display that sheds light on Swahili and Zanzibari culture. On the beachfront, directly across from the world-renown Forodhani Gardens, is the Old Fort, the oldest structure in Stone Town. The Old Fort, which was constructed in the 17th century to protect the island against Portuguese invasions, is today a popular attraction in Stone Town. While strolling around the courtyard in the middle, visitors can buy local goods from vendors while admiring the remnants of the ancient fort. The fort is still used for festivals and activities, thanks to its historic amphitheater.

Prison Island

Prison Island, which is half an hour’s boat ride from Zanzibar, offers an intriguing look into the island’s somewhat shady history: the area was both a slave prison and, when slavery was outlawed, a concentration camp for those with fatal illnesses. On the very tip of Zanzibar to the northwest sits the town of Nungwi. Because the tide doesn’t go out too far, this popular spot isn’t flooded with tourists, yet it’s also one of the best beaches in Zanzibar. Near the lighthouse on Nungwi’s northern coast is an aquarium that raises baby turtles found on the beach until they’re big enough to go out into the ocean on their own. At high tide, saltwater pours through the bluff and into the natural pond that serves as the aquarium. For those who want to relax in the sun and swim in the ocean without worrying about where to stay the night, this is an ideal location.
