Kenya Safari trip with children
Families love staying in vacation villas because they provide privacy, comfort, and a place to unwind away from other safari tourists. East Africa is home to a network of opulently furnished vacation villas that let you stay in the middle of the wilderness without giving up any creature comforts.
At Saruni Samburu, picture an eco-chic villa with views of Samburu’s vast, untamed landscape. Imagine eating supper outside on your veranda while your kids are learning about the traditions of the fierce warriors and protectors of the far-off Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy. You may see these gentle giants lumber on their never-ending search for new grass at Kalama, which serves as an important elephant migration route. After climbing Mount Ololokwe, the sacred mountain of the Samburu, take a dip in one of the two infinity pools to wash away the dust from the steep rocks.
As you follow migrating wildebeest to the Masai Mara, where Saruni Mara will welcome you for three spectacular nights, more adventure awaits. The villa includes all the amenities that a classic safari lodging should have, and then some. In addition to unmatched game viewing, there are a variety of daring activities available, such as climbing nearby Kilelioni or participating in the Warriors Academy, an interactive learning program created especially for families with young children. The Masaai Wellbeing Space offers therapeutic joys for people who enjoy unwinding before you return “home” to your safari villa for a family meal.

Detailed Itinerary: Kenya Private Family Safari
Day 1 – 4: Samburu sojourn | 3 Nights
A Saruni van will transport you to Wilson Airport in Nairobi for your short-haul trip to Samburu once you land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. You will spend the following three nights in one of the magnificent, eco-chic villas at Saruni Samburu. They are open and large, with breathtaking views of the distant Mount Kenya and the Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy. More than 800 square kilometers (497 square miles) of pristine wilderness are home to an abundance of wildlife, including the amazing long-necked gerenuk, which can go for days without water and stand on its hind legs for minutes at a time while nibbling on new leaves. Saruni Samburu is the only lodge in this area. It is only yours to explore, with the assistance of Samburu warriors who are enthusiastic about their homeland and culture. Large elephant herds must go through Kalama on their way between the northern and southern conservation areas.
There are six family villas overall in the little camp; you stay in one of them. Each family room has two separate bedrooms with en suite bathrooms connected by a large living area and a private terrace. The open veranda features a fireplace for the cool Samburu nights, and the bathrooms have bathtubs and outdoor showers. A massage or other service is available at the Samburu Wellbeing Space, or you can unwind in one of the two infinity pools.
Take day game drives through the conservancy and Samburu National Park for action and adventure to see the rare animals only found in this region of Kenya, the Samburu Special 5: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk. In the Kalama Conservancy, night drives are a special occasion because they are not allowed in national parks. Take a Samburu warrior on a guided forest walk, or visit a Kiltimany hamlet to learn about the local culture. Ancient rock art can be seen in neighboring caverns, and the Warriors Academy offers family- and kid-friendly lessons in bushcraft and animal tracking. Trek up Mount Ololokwe, the sacred mountain of the Samburu, or fly from Mount Kenya to Lake Turkana in a helicopter or a biplane.
Day 4 – 7: Migrate to the Mara | 3 Nights
The Great Migration – Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara, Crossing Mara River
Take off for the Masai Mara on another brief flight from Samburu. The only boutique resort in the Masai Mara is Saruni Mara, where you’ll end your journey. With only five magnificent cottages, one family villa, and one individual villa, it is small and cozy. The resort is located in the Mara North Conservancy, an exclusive, private wildlife concession abutting the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, in a quiet valley in the center of the conservancy.
Maasai warriors serve as your guides for your three nights at Saruni Mara, imparting their prodigious knowledge of the region, its wildlife, and their unique way of life.
Again, there is a lot to do: game drives in the Mara North Conservancy, Masai Mara National Reserve, and nearby conservancies; night drives in the Mara North Conservancy; guided bush walks through the forest and valleys near Saruni Mara; bird watching; lessons in animal tracking at the Warriors Academy; hiking up Kilelioni, the highest peak in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem; cultural excursions to the neighborhood Maasai Market; optional dawn hot-air balloon flights; There are starlit meals, sundowners in the awe and wonder of nature, and the Maasai Wellbeing Space for massages and treatments for those much-needed moments of leisure.
The Natural History Suite, which has two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a large living area, and a terrace, is ideal for families. You can learn more about the mammals, reptiles, trees, and birds of the Mara by reading a variety of publications. The Samburu Mara is the epitome of the wild.
Visit the rhino refuge on your final morning in the Mara while traveling to the airfield and take in the sights of the hippos and crocodiles in the Mara River. Take off for a second brief journey back to Nairobi.
