Climbing Mountain Rwenzori to Margherita Peak at 5109m ASL.
Day 1: Nyakalengija 1560m – Omukakiza Camp 2500m
Begin the day by contacting the Kabira Safaris reservation officer early in the morning to ensure that guides and porters are available right away. The walk begins at the park gate 1700m and ends at Omukakiza camp, covering a distance of 6.5 kilometers in 4-5 hours with a 1000 meter elevation. After passing through the gate, the trail leads into the montane forest zones, where you can see a variety of birds, an endemic three-horned chameleon, black and white colobus monkeys, and Rwenzori turaco birds. It climbs steeply to Omukakiza camp (tent pitch), where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Omukakiza camp 2500m – Lake Mahoma Camp 3000m
The trail drops steeply for a couple of hours from Omukakiza, passing through the bamboo forest, before becoming easier, similar to the flat section in the elephant zone. Portal peaks and Kinyangoma Hills may be seen from Omukakiza. The boardwalk is reached via a level area, and the surrounding vegetation is a mix of Heather and afro-alpine zones, with lots of Senecio plants, huge lobelia, and lobelia Liberia. Finally, arrive at Mahoma Lake, the deepest in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, at 12 feet deep and fed by Mount Baker’s melted snow. 5-6 hours and 6 kilometers were covered. At Mahoma Lakes Camp, we had dinner and stayed the night. (set up a tent)
Day 3: Lake Mahoma Camp through Nyabitaba Camp to Nyakalengija
Early departure from Lake Mahoma, retracing our steps back to Nyalengija. This 8-kilometer trail normally takes 3 hours to complete. Descending to the park gate via the Mubuku River and farmland. Dinner and an overnight stay at your preferred lodge.
